Management Tools, the Changing Workplace,

Group techniques (Workflow, Document Management, Groupware)
offer the means to achieve consistent improvements in productivity, and in
time they will change the nature of work. Traditional activities will
certainly require a smaller workforce, with more professional employees
than clerical staff. There will also be profound changes in working
conditions. The changes may be extreme and even contradictory: from a
return to Taylorism and compartmentalization of information, to increased
individual autonomy within a group that manages its information and
objectives in a context of shared resources and expertise

An Introduction to Workflow for Managers,

Workflow is a group tool in that it requires the participation of a group
of people in a company. But it is particularly geared toward
administrative processing of an external event, from the moment it comes
to the attention of the company until its processing is completed.
Workflow applications are designed to know which tasks and procedures to
apply to the cases they are designed to process. They break a case down
into separate tasks and assign each one to a particular user, or
participant , according to the management procedures in effect at the
time. The introduction of workflow constitutes a decisive change in the
way information technology contributes to business, because the software
looks at procedures as a whole, including monitoring of the procedure,
assignment of tasks, processing of exceptions and keeping track of time
limits, all the while recording data that facilitate the analysis of costs,
workloads and quality so vital to an industrial approach to information
processing. Workflow applications are generally linked to electronic
document management applications, and they can bring about productivity
gains of 20 to 50 per cent in the tasks they automate, and a 30 to 90 per
cent reduction in delays.

Business Integration Modeller and Monitor tandis que MQSeries workflow
devient WebSphere MQ Workflow.
Integration Modeller and Monitor (WebSphere BIM) permet a lui seul

Internet:Catalysts for Radical Change,

Together, Workflow and the Internet are set to provide us with some
astonishing results…By closely combining the unprecedented information
communication capabilities of the Internet with the strategic business
processes automation and integration capabilities of Workflow engines,
significant changes will be realized. These will enable a real
acceleration of productivity improvement within informationrelated
activities, and will pave the way for some totally new forms of work.
These will include home work, mobile work and virtual enterprises. The
latter will be formed for the duration of a specific project and will
build on the unique strengths of large corporations, small companies, and
individuals, regardless of their physical location world wide. This trend
will take years to develop widely, but the tools to support it are already
there and some visionary companies and individuals are already using them
convincingly.

The development of Internet, coupled with the development of
technologies for Knowledge Management on one side, and Work Management on
the other side, will have deep influence on the way economic actors play
their role in the world-wide market place. This will lead to the
development of a new form of economic undertaking where a set of economic
actors are associating their strengths to provide a specific service
traditionally provided by a single enterprise. Such a possibility will
have, in the long term, deep influence on the economy and enterprises
development strategies: 1. Launching a new product or service on the
market will become accessible to much smaller organisations with a portion
of the capital required in a traditional way. This will intensify
competition on traditional organisations. 2. Localisation of partners of
the virtual enterprise will become irrelevant, this will accelerate the
international co-operation and intensify work mobility between countries
and areas. 3. Overall, this will accelerate product and services
diversification and innovation, a condition for further economic
development. 4. Traditional organisations will have to face emerging
competition from non traditional competitors, and will probably have to
invent new ways to organise their production.

Customer Relationship Management (CRM), focuses on
automation of business activities related to customer acquisition,
customer retention, and customer relationship development. CRM covers many
different applications and initiatives. It is not a new domain but rather
a new area of focus for software vendors and users investments. Under
pressure for better quality and shorter cycle business processes, workflow
component is becoming of increasing importance inside CRM solutions while
it provides the perfect glue to ensure continuous processing between front

Workflow Engines will be Transaction Monitors of the
next Century
download
pdf 126 Ko
Transaction monitors have for the past 25 years provided tremendous
benefits to EDP users by enabling instant distant access to shared
databases through private and public networks in a secure and low cost way.
Today, most of the possible applications have been experimented with
successfully. Workflow Engines, coupled to document management systems,
will offer similar features. They are expected to produce similar benefits
by providing enhanced productivity and shorter response time. They will
also provide totally new ones applied to a fundamentally different target:
procedure assistance combined to tools integration. Based upon these
unique characteristics, the workflow engines will open up a totally new
area to automation. It will be far larger than the one accessible by
previously available tools and will in turn impose new requirements to
workflow engines like time, organisation, statistics, scalability,
distribution, co-operation and remote administration.
