A pilot project is the preliminary step before final decision to deploy a group technology in an enterprise. Its role is to train the enterprise to conduct such project, and to measure potential benefits, costs and delays, before launching the other projects. The selection criteria of such a project are the followings:
The pilot project is the first opportunity to test the infrastructure project capacity to set up needed adaptations to networking environment, servers, and workstations, and to support applications deployments at a reasonable cost. The primary goal of a pilot project is however to verify, through a real life operational implementation, the capability of the enterprise to conduct planned projects according to plans. When needed, analysis of results obtained in terms of costs and benefits may lead to update the plan more or less deeply in the direction of its reduction or of its extension. A secondary, but essential goal is to train the enterprise application project team. It is the first time that will be applied in a real case, the needs analysis methodologies, the developments methods and tools, the users training methods, and the operational transition modes from the previous environment to the targeted applications.
